Here is a great article from the good food revolution blog highlighting the great taste of PEI beef. We have had the pleasure of giving numerous tours to clients of Atlantic Beef Products over the last couple of years. It is a terrific opportunity to tell our story of environmentally friendly and low stress production to a consumer who is looking for more information about the food we produce and they consume.
Yesterday we planted some asparagus crowns. Since we have a small acreage we do it all by hand. With the help of some neighbors (Alex and Tessa Craig) we had planted 1000 plants in under two hours. For those of you who are not familiar with asparagus, the material you plant are called crowns, a root mass that resembles spiders, for lack of a better term. It will be 2013 before these plants will be ready for harvest. Asparagus is a perennial crop and must be allowed to get established and build... Continue reading ...

I stated in a previous post that I would take some pictures of the year's arrivals. It was a beautiful sunny day here and the calves were feeling good so standing for a picture was a low priority for them but I managed to snap a few. My Cousin Greg's wife Stacey MacKean Hardy had her kids up for a visit to see the cows the other day as they were going through "cow withdrawal". She snapped some pictures as they were looking and I wanted to share her photography skills.
The comments in this catalogue are certainly unique. They make for a good read. I would say marketing genius as most people would be waiting by their mailbox for next year's! For those of you who are not involved in the cattle business, this is a cattle sale catalogue and the owner uses uncommon and "colorful" words to describe them.
Calving is progressing at a snails pace. We only have 11 calves so far. I don't know what everyone else is finding but here this year the cows are going 6-10 days over with heavy birthweights (all unassisted). Usually this means more bull calves but we are heavy on heifers. To date we have 6 eye candy calves with 4 heifers and 2 bulls. There are 4 purebred angus calves with 2 of each. It has been hard to get pictures but I will post some when I get them.

You know fall is just around the corner when we start to wean calves to get them ready for the fall shows. Five calves made the cut and after a few days to adjust the training will begin.
Another sign of changing seasons is harvest time. We combined our organic spelt yesterday and are quite happy with the yield. This crop was not underseeded but the clover is unreal! Soybeans are planned to be put in this field so at least it will be a nice plowdown.
As usual trying to do dry hay here is torture like no other! Very rarely do you seem to get three good days in a row. We have managed to get it down to just 15 acres remaining so all in all not too bad. The summer has been warm and we have had rather cool summers for the last couple of years so we won't complain. I delivered our navy beans to Maurice Girouard of St. Paul, NB a couple of weeks ago.
